VAT Rates in the European Union

If a company pays value-added tax (VAT) in a Member State of the European Union (EU) other than that in which it is established, it is possible, under certain conditions, to obtain a refund. It is therefore important to know the VAT rates of the different EU countries.
VAT rates are governed by the VAT Directive of 28 November 2006 and differ according to the EU country. The VAT rates in force in each country are published annually by the European Commission. The list of rates for 2018 can be found online on the EU's official website.
The average VAT rate in Member States is around 21%. Luxembourg is the country where the rate is the lowest (17%) and Hungary is the country where the rate is the highest (27%). Since VAT is the most lucrative tax for states, VAT rates are thus generally increased each year (except for Greece, which saw a drop between 2017 and 2018 from 6.5% to 6%). It is also important to note that some EU countries charge a reduced rate on certain limited categories of goods.
The recovery of intra-Community VAT is subject to specific rules and directives. ASD Group can help you manage all the administrative formalities related to VAT. To learn more about tax representation, please visit our website or contact us at +1 514-798-1583.
